The crocodile (in Papus’s Tarot, represented instead of a dog) is the emblem of relentless fate and inevitable redemption and retribution for actions taken, as nothing in life happens ‘just because’ – everything comes with a price.”

We live in the Age of Aquarius, a highly “Uranian” era, and are better adapted to the manifestations of Uranus and The Fool than our ancestors, who lived in more predictable and grounded times. Though creation disrupts the original order of existence – placing The Fool at the edge of an abyss – it is guided by higher laws.

It whispers, “Detach from worldly conventions and be who you truly are.” However, The Fool is inherently asocial. When it appears in a reading, it suggests that the soul is wandering, detached from the pressing, mundane problems of daily life. This detachment is not always well-timed. In some tarot decks, The Fool aptly describes the state of being overburdened by the twelfth house in astrology – a “burnt-out reactor,” where reason (the loyal dog!) nips at your heels, urging you to turn toward simple joys (“the birds”) rather than chasing crocodiles under immovable rocks where no water flows (neglected responsibilities).

In Waite’s deck, The Fool is placed not at the beginning but between Judgement and The World. Mathers places it at the very end, after The World. Case and most authors position it at the very start, before The Magician. Its placement is open to individual interpretation.
